I really appreciate Renner. His even tone lends him a great deal of credibility in my eyes. I'm trying to decide which of his books to read first right now.

Guys, I really enjoy your podcast. One thing, though! James Renner!!! Keep him far, far away! He's out to stir up interest in his book but NO ONE close to Maura will talk to this guy. There's a reason for that. I don't trust anything he says or how he SPINS details he might possibly have. Don't believe him. Anyway keep up the great work!

  • Great episode! Excellent investigating and speculation by James Renner. Seems suspicious to me that Kate's best friend is missing, and she doesn't at least take one call from Bill R. I would think she would at least want to know when he heard from her last. Unless Kate knows more than she lets on.

Let me get this straight… Renner had a hunch that Murray was probably “not as prim and proper as everybody thinks”, so he dug into the private life of a college freshman, and “sure enough, it got DARK.” These dark findings indicative of her “bad character” include: Changing her college & major Buying and drinking Kahlua Having sexual relationships with colleagues in the same athletic club Having a sexual relationship with the track coach. A young girl going for older man in higher position. No woman has ever found herself fantasizing about, or finding herself, in this exact situation. Ordering eighty dollars’ worth of pizza with someone else’s credit card. Maybe she bought eight pizzas, ate them herself, and spent the night throwing up! Or, more realistically, she was providing food for a dorm party and didn’t feel like using her own cash. Looking “hardcore” in ONE photo, revealing a glimpse of an alter-ego. Never mind the fact that the picture was taken by police that busted her using someone else’s credit card. Sorry, but is she supposed to look cheerful in this picture? She’s undoubtedly pissed and embarrassed. Shoplifting makeup. As if pocketing an eye shadow or two is completely unheard of. Do you want to pay $18 for a pencil to color your eyebrows with? Neither do most women. Why do you think there are multiple security guards in Sephora? It seems that the sensationalizing of Maura Murray has overpowered common sense. Murray seems like a normal college girl to me, under a lot of stress from being enrolled in a prestigious school, being an all-star track athlete, and trying to maintain her family’s expectations. These people are trying to paint the most dramatic story possible to sell a book and a documentary.

Everyone is so weird about James Renner!! She did have a dark past, she was in trouble with the law twice in a matter of a year for identity theft in addition to almost getting a DUI. Anyone that wants to ignore these red flags is purposefully being blind and ignorant.

I believe you guys gave Mr. Renner the best airing of his opinions that I have heard. I have a much better understanding of his perspective than I had received from any other sources. Excellent job, guys. However, Mr. Renner falls prey to the same trap many of the Maura Murray detectives fall into, which is being too in love with their theory. The reality is I have never heard one shred of evidence that makes the tandem car theory better than suicide, lost in the wildness, walk away on her own, or abduction. I believe huge leaps are taken with facts, such as Kate never returned Bill's calls. I guess he has not heard of landlines and saving cellular minutes. While most plans are unlimited talk today, someone on a budget in 2004 would be worrying about minutes, roaming fees, and long distance. Perhaps Kate got his message and called him back from a phone at her work or on campus. We really don't know, so the assumption should not be made that she did not return the calls. Therefore, implying she knows more than she has said because she did not return Bill's calls would be an error. The same is true with many of the facts related to the time leading up to her disappearance. They may mean nothing or they could mean everything, but we really don't know. When an investigator infers meaning that fits their theory rather than leaving the options open, everything begins to fit their narrative and they begin only asking the questions related it. Thanks for the good show.

Love the podcast & really enjoyed this episode. I wondered if you have entertained the idea that the accident was on purpose? That she was alone in the vehicle so she could wreck it in a familiar area then make her way to her traveling companions? It seems to me that if I wanted to disappear, I wouldn't want to be traveling in a vehicle that could be traced to me. Better yet, I'd like to vanish from thin air. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!

I have to say, of all I have heard about the Maura Muarry Case (A LOT, including renders book, which I am going to redhead now, because I don't recall this much detail into the actual case, not a bad thing, but nevertheless less....) your two prior episodes and then concluding with this one has by far made the most logical sense to me, to the point, I may even be done investigating it. My sister ran away from an abusive husband with their two daughters several years back, and it all truly made so much sense to me now. Fred very well could have helped his daughter and grandchild to be, to flee and is keeping up appearances to keep them safe from Bill and I can't blame him at all for that. As a matter of fact, I respect and admire him. The accident could totally have been a staged, and genius idea that Fred and Maura's fore knowledge of the area, gave them the perfect place for that accident to be completely plausible. Every theory, her committing suicide, getting lost in the woods, sucoming to the elements, being met with foul play or clearing her head are all plausible. Combined with the ingenuity of the setting of this right angle turn, in the winter, along the backdrop of the White Mountians, even down to all the details, like the rag in the tail pipe, the open alcohol, to throw the cops off into thinking it's just a DUI, to the messages to her professors, calling the condos, down to the school books and (is it 'Not With Out Peril' book) found in her car, all sell and conflict each theory with one another is amazingly impressive and I feel can be answered by this theory. I truly believe that Maura, Fred and Kate had the combined wisdom, street smarts/experience with police investigations, and intelligence to come up with every detail of such a great plan to ensure Maura's and her expectant child's safety. It all could have been planned with him, Maura and Kate, over dinner the weekend prior. Also, the accident with his car could have been a dry run, or her genuinely worried about it all, too. Fred could or could have not known or been a part of it. I wouldn't be surprised, either way, because he strikes me as a father that would have done, and will continue to do anything for his daughter. I know my father would have hired men to kill my sisters husband, or done it himself, had he know all the details about what he had done to her, and her children, while he was still alive. I love you guys and the cut of your JIB. I am so glad I figured out the way to listen to your show again, and that you guys gave Renner the best stage possible to talk out his theory, as well as all the amazing points you brought up in the privious episodes, that really made this all finally fit together for me, because without your prior points, I don't think it would have reasonated as well, as I was a firm beliver in the foul play, prior to them. Although, nothing will surprise me in this case if this is all incorrect in the end either.

Never Made the Connection between the girl's eye witness account of Maura and the two girls at Butson's and them being a possible tandem driver.....That one nursing student didn't like to be questioned either......Maybe they were in on the idea, but only to a certain point, like the first leg of it....and then simply kept in touch over the years through e-mails.......All corroborating evidence seems to point to a narrative such as this....I.E. The tandem driver theory......A second driver....Thank you for writing this book again Sir...You are a gentleman and a scholar. As you said in closing, I'm sure we will find out in the news one day....Probably an unpaid parking ticket or some pizza paid with someone else's credit card.....? I just hope If there is a kid he/she will be safe from Bill................ If it's Bill's? Maybe there is a completely different reason for her leaving, maybe we will truly never find her...Either way I do believe you have indirectly solved this case Sir!

Just listened, been a listener of more recent episodes for a long time. Great show! What if Maura left the party with a man that impregnated her. She then wasn't sure how to handle the situation and was trying to run from her boyfriend in TX. She could have possibly taken off with this random guy from the party or once this random guy found out she was pregnant, he killed her and hid the body. Just thinking...

The rag in the tail pipe is the biggest mystery to me. I think we covered it our our MM shows but I was very thankful that James would drive down to Columbus and spend the day with us talking true crime. So when he was here I wanted to let him drive the ship. I think it's time to revisit this tail pipe issue. Cheers, Nic

AB - I think there has been some trouble getting that nailed down. James spoke about this. If I remember correctly they were refusing to speak with anyone other than Fred Murray and the police. So from the outside we have nothing. I'd be curious to hear their stories. I believe they spoke to Fred, I'd love to hear what he thinks of their stories as well. I still think the cabin plays a roll in this whole mystery. If she didn't make it to the cabin, I think she was going there and not alone. I can only think of four likely people she would go there with and you named two of them. Nic
